Captured on Gameboy Color with Gameboy Camera

THE PROCESS

For this capstone project, I chose to compare the first portable camera, the Gameboy Camera from 1998, with my modern Canon R6 Mark II. Though the Gameboy itself is gaming console, with the Pocket Camera accessory, gamers in the late 90s were able to take photos on a non-traditional, 0.014 megapixel, monochromatic camera.

Shooting at only 128 x 112 pixels, the Gameboy takes photos that look far different from a conventional camera. Because of this, some pictures were more of a challenge than others. For instance, the photo on the left is an unused blood moon photo from March, 2026. The blood moon shoot took a long time to set up properly. To get the moon to appear as more than a few pixels, I used my telephoto lens from my actual camera, positioned the gameboy camera through it, and spent a good 20 minutes trying to actually find it through the 100ish pixel viewfinder. It made it extra difficult considering that the gameboy screen was not backlit meaning I had to use my phones flashlight to see anything I was doing.

For the Canon photos, there was a definite upgrade in megapixel quality. The Mark II features a 24.2 megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor. In other words, the Canon has an extra 24,186,000 pixels to work with. In the Gameboy’s defense, the photos taken do give off a certain aura that a traditional camera simply doesn’t have.
